Introduction

There's more to taking an herb than just popping a pill and following the directions on the package. You need to learn about the side effects, too.

The fact is, there are plenty of herbs that can't be taken under certain situations or for certain people. For example, I have a problem retaining water. Licorice makes the water retention worse, so I avoid it.

Another classic example is for people who are on drugs such as coumadin. Herbs that contain vitamin K, such as stinging nettle, need to be avoided because they don't mix well with the drug.

Your local public library should also have some books on herbal medicine where you can look. You may also be able to find information in magazines or in special online resources that your library has access to.

It is a good idea to have at least two books in your home that list the side effects and dangers of taking a particular herb. Browse what the store has to offer to make sure it gives a complete list.
