How to Make a Wild Herb Salad

Introduction

Learning to identify and collect wild plants can be very rewarding. When the plants are picked and used right away, they are at their peak nutritional value. Once you pick the herbs, one of the tastiest ways to eat them is to make a salad. Here's how to do it.

  • A good field guide of wild plants
  • Wild herbs of choice such as chickweed, dandelion, chicory and wild mustard greens
  • Salad dressing of choice

Step One

With your field guide, make sure you properly identify any plants you want to pick. The field guide will also tell you the tastiest plants to use in a salad.

Step Two

Pick the plants at the right time according to the information in the field guide. Make sure you identify the plants properly so you don't pick the wrong species of plants and get sick.

Wash the plants thoroughly and let them dry on absorbent paper towels or a clean cloth.

Step Four

Place the collected wild herbs in a serving dish and pour 2 to 3 tablespoons of dressing over the greens. Toss lightly and serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • A good dressing to try is a lemon vinaigrette. Italian dressing also works well.
  • Ask someone to help you identify the plants that has a lot of knowledge.
  • Make sure you identify the wild herbs correctly. Use multiple field guides if you need to.
